American Museum of Natural Hisory

October 25 & 28

While I was out taking pictures on West 79 Street near the American Museum of Natural History around 6:30 PM, I heard and saw three helicopters spinning their rotors overhead a little south of where I was. Later on I found out there had been a gruesome murder of two young children by their nanny on West 75 Street.

It's not all pretty pictures.

This was my first time out taking pictures since we returned from Germany. The Nikon D700 felt cumbersome after using the Canon PowerShot G12 for two weeks while traveling. I did not quite get what I was after, but it felt good to compose with a viewfinder.

Note: The above picture may be pretty. Beautiful flowers can grow on a pile of dung. 200 West Street is the address Goldman Sachs. For those who don't remember, or never knew, Goldman Sachs is one of the bailed out firms that sold millions of dollars of junk "credit default swaps" to its own customer with full knowledge that they were almost worthless. It is one of the major investment banks, along with Citibank and other "too big to fail" institutions, that precipitated the crash of 2008. Most of us are still suffering while it thrives. Its CEO is a multimillionaire, an arrogant free man, while hundreds of thousands of his victims, down the line, lost their jobs and their homes.

On the site of the of once thriving Fulton Fish Market developers have erected New York City's most shoddy tourist trap, the South Street Seaport Museum, a strip of bad taste flanked by the East River and the Financial District. The walls of glass enclosing shops, bars and restaurants reflect the East River and the remnants of New York Harbor. The eye is easily fooled.
